The Dispatcher writes about the Warning of Approaching Trains solution

The internationally recognized American expert in telematics, digital map databases and location-based services, Michael L. Sena, is the author of the periodical newsletter The Dispatcher. In its latest issue, Sena writes about the Warning of Approaching Trains solution and Swedish efforts to improve safety at unattended level crossings.

With the goal to update and educate its readers, the Dispatcher newsletter covers the latest in the world of vehicle telematics.

In its October issue, Sena writes about the safety problem of unattended level crossings – a problem both the U.S and Sweden have in common. In the US, nearly 80% of all level crossings are unprotected and about 30% of fatal accidents related to rail traffic occur in or around these. In Sweden, 58% of all level crossings are unprotected and a total of 15-20 people are killed in rail traffic each year. Sena writes about the work of the Swedish National Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and its efforts to improve safety at unprotected level crossings in the country, highlighting its collaboration with Digital Twin on the Warning of Approaching Trains solution.

The solution is an application that warns the user that a train is approaching at the crossing where they are located. For the solution to work all operating trains must have a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) installed, which is not the case today in Sweden nor in the U.S today.
