Hyperspecialization

Looking back historically, the process of making a product or providing a service often required only one person or a small team at the most. In modern society, that same process is usually broken down into smaller pieces performed by specialized workers and organizations, making it a complex supply chain.

This entails that each task is being performed by a specialist within their field of expertise with their own way of seeing things and ways of working. Most of the process operates in silos, isolated from others within the supply chain. This leads to the question of wether all of these specific tasks are really necessary since it is between the silos that organizational gaps may appear and lead to trouble along the supply chain.
